(Same) / Folklords / Lone Wolf

February 20, 2016 9:00 pm

A very rare chance to see some very deep and free musicians together under one roof.

Jason Ajemian’s Folk-Lords is the sound of an outstanding group of New York improvisors performing six conceptual, visual & sonic landscapes. Meditative Mingus ballads, imaginary conversations between Sun Ra & Thelonious Monk, poetic takes on pop culture, and an elegy for Malachi Rischter are transmitted via Ajemian’s unique notational methodology. Folk-Lords defies genre with an adhesiveness that expands on the creative music tradition through a social/cultural lens of now.

Ryan Sawyer (Lone Wolf) plays drum kit and sings. He is probably best known for his collaborations with other high profile improvisational performers (Trio with Nate Wooley / C. Spencer Yeh, Trio with Thurston Moore / Daniel Carter, Trio with Colin Steston / Shahzad Ismaily, Duo with Tunde Adebimpe, Duo with Matana Roberts, Duo with Darius Jones, and so forth), or as a key member to various groups he has played with throughout his prolific and fruitful career (At The Drive-In, Boredoms, Stars Like Fleas, Tall Firs, Glass Rock, Family Dynamics, Eye Contact). However, his live set simply has to be witnessed to be really understood.

(Same) is a site-specific, performance based duo comprised of Butchy Fuego and Jeremiah Chiu. Both have backgrounds as musicians and artists. The collaboration is equal parts visual art and experimental live band. (Same) began through a series of performances by the Seeing Trails Hike Gang, Division of Fine Art (DFA) in October, 2015 at High Desert Test Sites: Epicenter. The performance, Doppler at High Noon, took place on the tarmac of Green River Municipal Airport. The performers accelerated up to 50mph, strapped to the back of two pickup trucks, crossing past the audience. Their second performance, at The Getty Center, was a visual music work, synthesizing instruments and improvisation as an abstract digital painting. (Same) continues to collect their multi-faceted interests into hybrid works of art, presenting audiences with new expressions of contemporary art and music.
